I finally found a natural deodorant that actually works!
I’m thrilled because I’ve been on the hunt for years, literally. I’ve tried everything. Some worked but made my armpits itchy. Some were terrible and made me smell worse. Some worked but were ridiculously pricey. Some basically did nothing at all.
And so I even tried going without for a bit but, I always felt a little clammy, ya know? It was uncomfortable.
Then I found Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant – the geranium sensitive skin formula – and it’s magical. And they have cute branding too, which I’m a sucker for.
As with all of my personal care products these days, when on the hunt for a natural deodorant that actually works, I looked it up in EWG’s Skin Deep Database before using. The brand and product themselves weren’t listed but, each ingredient was. And every one of them is good to go with an EWG rating of 1/Green.
You see, when I check the Skin Deep App, and the specific product itself isn’t listed, I then go through the painstaking process of looking up every single one. (Trust me, I know. This is an exercise for people with time on their hands.)
My rules of thumb these days though, are as follows. If the product:
Is EWG Verified, it’s good to go.
Is listed as 1 or 2 , it’s good to go.
Contains ingredients listed only as 1 or 2, it’s good to go.
Is listed as 3 or higher, I do not use.
Contains ingredients listed as 3 or higher, I do not use.
It’s kind of crazy that we even have to do this but, that’s the reality. In order to find safe beauty products, we have to do a little digging. You can’t just trust the label saying things like ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ because it doesn’t really mean much. Even some of Burt’s Bees products don’t pass the test.
The good news though, is that this whole safer beauty movement is really picking up steam. Sure, only two products I scanned at CVS the other day actually met my safety standards but, there are tons of brands out there creating great products that are super safe. More are coming. They’re getting cheaper. And I’m even starting to see them pop up in places like Target. Boop!
